Lately my heart has been burdened about social media. Although there are positives to using it (such as sharing testimonies, keeping in touch with distant friends/relatives, advertising events, etc.), I just have a heavy feeling about it. It almost negates its purpose and prevents us from being social. How often do we glance around a room never to make eye contact with a single person because their eyes are glued to their phone screen? I know this exact situation has allowed me to talk myself out of sharing the gospel.
Not only that, but social media oftentimes leads to ignoring others, neglecting responsibility, and being exposed to all sorts of negative/ungodly material.
Instead of browsing through months of posts to get to know the people around me, I want to get back to having real conversations. I don’t want to read that my friend is engaged; rather, I want to hear the laughter in her voice and watch her eyes light up as she explains how her fiancée proposed. I could go on and on, but I think you catch my drift.
For these reasons, I have deleted my Twitter app, deactivated my Snapchat, and deleted my Facebook app. I will not delete the Facebook Messenger app, so if any friends need to get in touch with me they can still send me a message. I’ll also keep Instagram, but I will only be sharing a few random highlighted moments. If anyone would like to keep up with how God is working in my life, I will update my blog from time to time. If you have my number, feel free to call, text, or even set up a time to hang out. I want to invest in REAL relationships! I pray you, too, put down your phone and cherish the people God has blessed you with.
